Fishing Report for October 2, 2015

Recent rainfall the past few days has boosted flows in the Millers River, and the timing couldn't have been more perfect.  Today the Millers recieved its fall stocking of trout in the Bearsden and Wendell Depot C&R Areas.  Approximately 1000 Brown Trout around 12 inches (+) were stocked in each C&R Area.

The chapter worked again this fall in cooperation with Masswildlife staff to help them stock the C&R areas.  The Wendell Depot C&R area was float stocked, and the fish were spread out all along the river from Holtshire Rd to the Power Station Pool.  The Bearsden C&R Area was stocked from the end of Blossom Street,  and at the Rezendes Pool Area off Gulf Road, and at the UTD Dam.  Members came out in good numbers help stock the Browns and spread them out.

Get out and enjoy the fall fishing season!

Fishing Report for May 29, 2015

I just can't say enough about the Millers this spring...Despite the dry, warm weather we have had this past month, the river keeps on producing outstanding fishing.  With the low flows, the dry fly action has been fantastic, and the hatches continue to be epic.  Cahills and Sulphurs have been hatching out along the lower Millers the trout rising consistently rising to them during the evening ( aka the evening rise...).

The weather forecast for Sunday-Tues is calling for rain....Its about time!...This should provide a much needed boost for the river to help drive us into the summer fishing season.  Remember though to still keep an eye on the water temperature, as we enter June temperatures will be on the rise and the best fishing will be during the early morning or evening.

Be sure to pack plenty of Usuals (size 12-14), Cahills (size 12-14), Suphurs (12-14), and Hares Ear Nymphs (Size 12-14), and have great time fishing the Millers!

Fishing Report for May 22, 2015

The Millers continues to recieve heathly stockings of trout, with sections in Orange and Erving being stocked again this week.  This weeks rain didn't amount to much, and as a result the river flows remain low in the Bearsden and Wendell Depot C&R Areas.  Concentrate on fishing the deeper runs and pools for best sucess until we get some rain.  Low flows nothwithstanding, we have been experiencing relatively cool weather, and very cool nights which are keeping temperatures at very good levels for trout fishing.

Low flows, and cool temperatures should make dry fly fishing good to excellent this weekend. A dark caddis pattern in size 12-16 will work well, as would standard mayfly patterns such as an Adams or Quill Gordon dry fly in sizes 12-14, a tan Usual in sizes 12-14 is a sure bet as well.

Tight lines!

Fishing Report for May 15, 2015

The Millers continues to fish very well despite the recent stretch of warm weather and diminishing flows.  With cool nights this week, and a little rain on the way on Tuesday, the fishing should remain excellent this week.  However, we are in dire need of rain to maintain these conditions, most of the northeast is in an extended period of drought.

Caddis fly hatches continue to be strong, especially in the morning and late afternoon, and Hendricksons and Light Cahill Mayflies are also hatching out on the river.  For a sure thing...Tie on a caddis pupa or emerger pattern in tan or green, size 12-16, and hold on!

Fishing Report for May 8, 2015

Millers River recieved its annual stocking of Brown Trout today in the Bearsden and Wendell Depot C&R Areas.  Approximately 800 Brown Trout,  ranging in size between 12-18 in with most in the 14-16 in range were stocked in each C&R Area.  In addition to the Brown Trout stocked in the C&R Areas, Masswildlife also stocked serveral truckloads of Rainbow Trout into several other spots along the river today, and during the week. Put simply, the river is fully loaded with trout!!

The chapter worked again this year in cooperation with Masswildlife staff to help them stock the C&R areas with Brown Trout.

Caddis fly hatches continue to be very strong and numerous this week with the warm sunny weather we have experienced lately.  This morning the entire lower river was literally covered with grayish/black Caddis Flies, size 12-16.  Light Cahills, size 12-14 were also seen hatching along the lower river albeit in lower numbers.  A cream or tan colored Usual, size 12-14, is a great pattern to use this time of year to fish the Cahill hatch.

While the river recieved fresh stockings of trout today, numerous holdover trout were seen rising to the caddis hatch while we were float stocking through the lower river.

Flows are at or near optimal levels for wading and fishing right now, and water temperatures remain in the low to mid 60's.  However, that being said, flows still continue to drop and temperatures are on the rise.  We are in a dry spell right now, and are in need of some decent rainfall to keep the river at good flows and moderate temperatures.  Let's hope it comes soon!

Time to get out there and fish the Millers!

Fishing Report for May 1, 2015

According to MassWildlife, the Millers recieved fresh stockings of trout (rainbows) in South Royalston and Athol this week. Flows are dropping through 250 cfs in those areas, and with the weather looking great this weekend, its a sure to be a great weekend to get out there and fish the Upper Millers.

Flows in the lower river are now coming into wadable levels with the Erving stretch dropping below 600 cfs.  The lower river has yet to recieve a fresh stocking of trout,, but that will change by next week.  Expect fishing to be stellar next weekend with flows near optimal levels, and the river freshly stocked with trout.

With the sunny weather, the river temperatures are coming up and we are seeing steady hatches of little black caddis flies, size 14-18.

Get out there and start fishing!!

Fishing report for April 24, 2015

Flows on the Millers remain high following the recent rainfall,  Expect flows to continue to drop this week with the Bearsden C&R Section coming into wadable levels by Sunday  Expect the Wendell Depot C&R Section to remain high throughout next week, with flows coming in the wadable range by next weekend assuming no additional rainfall.

Water temperature is still fairly cold with sparse hatches.  Best bets are to fish down deep with weighted flies, or sinking lines.  Fish streamers or a black wooley bugger, Sizes 6-8.

According the MassWildlife stocking schedule, as of Friday April 24, the Millers River has yet to recieve a spring stocking of trout.  While holdover trout are expected to remain in the river this spring, expect them to remain in their deep holding pools until water temperatures start to warm and the trout become more active.
